Skimo's Studio Mix for YAB London

by Skimo

Skimo does an exclusive mix for YAB. It features some amazing techno tracks on there from the likes of Roska, Faithless, Gui Boratto and also Owen Howells.

I was introduced to Skimo by producer Warsnare. The guys used to hold events around a decade ago, like serious jungle events for the Vinyl lovers. The way Skimo told me about them, filling up the club when he was just 17 when he organised it, makes me wish I was born much earlier to see such a feat.

On the topic of vinyl, this mix was done on DVS (Digital Vinyl System) and you can tell by how precise it is. To be quite honest, the highest quality of mixes have been done on Vinyl, and it’s one form of DJing that I would love to try out some day when I have enough money to!

This is the sound of Skimo. Enjoy.

Nobel Night Cap 2011 Mix

by Tova Wellton

Swedish House DJ Tova Wellton demonstrates how house music should be played in this mix for the Nobel Night Cap she did 2 months ago. Featuring tracks from Hardwell and Swedish electro duo Dada Life, Miss Wellton provides 36 minutes and 8 seconds of pure euphoric heaven.

What’s funny is that she mixes quite like me, quickly hopping through track to track, which means it doesn’t give that boring repetitive feel that many mixes have!

This is guaranteed to get the bass face out of you so have a listen and follow her on SoundCloud too! When she dropped Ivory by Congorock, I almost melted. Dubstep fans would love this bass event though it’s not Dubstep, but still it would seriously work out your subwoofers!

Jelacee - Mind, Body & House EP (Review)

I wouldn’t say it’s vintage, that term is very overused…

Tech House is making a huge comeback and its audience is growing really quickly. What’s good about Tech House is that it keeps it’s originality intact, unlike Dubstep which has become a beastly form of Electronic Dance Music.

The thing about Tech House is that it’s not the type of music to make you jump around like a 15-year-old loony who thinks that taking ecstacy at that age is cool. Tech House is different. The genre expresses multiple emotions in the form of a strict 120-130bpm range and is perfect to dance, to jive or to just have playing in the background while you reminisce the good times over a bottle of champs with your friends.

Jelacee’s EP, ‘Mind Body & House’ which is being released on Audio Hooligans does this really well. It’s a 2 track EP which brings together both Tech and Funky House in a wonderful hybrid of two step and synths. The label, Audio Hooligans describe this EP as exploring “the electronic continuum of bass music fused with retro synths from the 80s and old school gym samples,” and I agree. It’s 80s inspired music in 2012, who wouldn’t like that?

I like originality and I like artists who manage to produce music sticking to genre specifics but extend and break the barriers a bit by adding their own inspirations. Jelacee’s track “Human Traffic” does this really well as it is the lovechild of Tech and Funky House all in one track. It’s a track that you can play at parties and clubs where there are lots of people, and it’s definitely one where I will see the junk in the trunks coming out. Really upbeat and classic with synths that appear to have been lifted from my parents old music collection. How attractive does that sound?

However I’m a massive Tech House fan and I love the different basslines each producer can offer. Jelacee’s second track on ‘Mind, Body & House’, “Unspoken Energy” just does it for me. It’s all strictly Tech House here, no complications or borrowing from other genres, and as much as I live diversification, I have to become a hypocrite and say that this strict decision Jelacee made of keeping it strictly Tech House was a very good one. I don’t mean to sound cliche either, but it really does broadcast unspoken energy, so much of it in fact that I’m having to look left and right as I write this in my university library to see if anyone is looking at me as I subtley dance away. Listening to this makes me want to add this to my collection and just start a rave here and now in the library.

Jelacee describes his EP as “the old vintage stuff that needs to be heard”. I wouldn’t say it’s vintage, that term is very overused. If I were to describe his sound as vintage, I’d be associating it with the hipster movement and I do not want to do that. His music is better than that and it’s not for the hipster’s to come and jump on and kill like they did with Dubstep. Instead I would call his sound authentic.

Look at House music on a whole - the music made by the likes of Steve Angello, David Guetta and Avicii for example are brilliant, but they’re the Topman of the music industry. Everyone knows them, everyone buys them etc. and they’re leaders in the market. Jelacee’s sound is like the high quality backstreet clothes shops that needs to be discovered, it’s not a sound that comes to you, instead you find it and cherish it and therefore it holds its sentimental value.

Video: Alex Kella smashing NYE at the O2 Academy Brixton

I spent my new year’s celebrations with one of my favourite progressive house DJ’s, Alex Kella. His set at the Full On Ferry was incredible and the countdown was smashing too. Watch this video to see the countdown in action and to see one of his mashups go down with a bang!

Murder [mrNathan Remix]

by Ms. Amigo

I told you to look out for a guy called mrNathan. He dropped his latest remix last night and I’m lost for words as it’s absolutely slick, clean and such a brilliant track to get the party vibes going!

What I like is that he doesn’t cut off the mids entirely on the breakdown to the drop, and that just gets me so hyped up, even at 7:23am.

Make sure you check this shit out. If you’re into house, then you’ll definitely love this. If you don’t, then I’ll muuurdaaahhhhhhh

LANA DEL REY GETS FUNKY HOUSE MAKEOVER

LANA DEL REY, a YouTube sensation whose hit single “Video Games” which received many positive reviews, has been given a funky house makeover by the 80s house legend himself Mr Fingers.

The 9 minute long track sees her voice accompanied by a very upbeat and funky instrumental, making her soft track married to the dancefloor to be loved by many. Mr Fingers, probably known for his involvement in the 80s Chicago House movement, makes a brilliant comeback to the spotlight after so many years.

I absolutely love Lana Del Rey and this remix makes me love her even more. This is a definite recommend from YAB London.

SEDUCTIVE - UNDERGROUND SOUND (ORIGINAL MIX) //

So I bought Buraka Som Sistema’s Fabriclive 49 compilation and just found this song after such a long time. I just played it on full volume and it was so loud that it got the parents angry. In fact, anything that gets the parents angry is a good tune. This is certainly one of them and demonstrates dirty house at its finest.

No wonder Buraka Som Sistema used it!

START MOVING

by SHIFT KEY

SHIFT KEY - START MOVING //

Who remembers Shift Key? He’s always in and out of the limelight and right now he’s in the limelight…and will be staying there for quite some time. His EP Step In The City is due for release soon on Bullet Train Records and it’s a big one to which I’m looking forward to. This song however is really funky and has caught my eye…or shall I say ear, really quickly. However it will not be on the EP (awh) but nevertheless its a free download via his Soundcloud!
